PRESS RELEASE 27 November 2024

December 11, 2024

The President of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism (NCPBM), H.E. Peter Mafany Musonge, informs the public that he has dispatched members of the Commission abroad to some Cameroonian diplomatic representations.

Teams of the NCPBM that left the country over the last weekend are visiting the Cameroonian High Commission in Ottawa (Canada), and the embassies in Beijing (China), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) and Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire).

The main aim of the missions is to evaluate the implementation of the national policy on the promotion of official languages in Cameroon in the said High Commission and those embassies to be visited.

In this regard, NCPBM members will raise awareness among staff of the diplomatic representations to be visited on the importance of effectively promoting the use of the two official languages in the discharge of their duties.

They will also explain the intent and letter of the law of December, 2019, on the promotion of official languages in Cameroon and also gather proposals from the diplomatic staff on ways and means of better promoting the two official languages within Cameroon’s diplomatic representations.

In addition, Mr Musonge says the current missions will enable members raise awareness among diplomatic staff on the dangers of hate speech and xenophobia. By so doing, they would, in turn, sensitize Cameroonians living in their territories of competence on the need to fight hate speech and promote living-together and cohesion in the countries of their sojourn.

The ongoing missions are a continuation of similar ones carried out last year (2023) by NCPBM members in Cameroon’s diplomatic representations in Washington, Paris, London, Berlin, Brussels, Abuja and Pretoria. These missions which will last one week, fall within the 2024 Plan of Action of the Commission, which was validated by the Presidency of the Republic.
