The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism has organised a colloquium to chart a way for the value to be better entrenched in Cameroon.
The colloquium was held on the theme: “multiculturalism at the crossroads between tradition and modernity”. The event brought together some of the best experts, researchers, and university dons, noted for their independent minds, to brainstorm on the theme and help the Commission produce a National Strategic Plan and a draft law on multiculturalism in Cameroon.
In his opening speech at the colloquium, the chairperson of the Commission, H.E. Peter Mafany Musonge, pointed out that the focus of the participants would be to analyse the concept of multiculturalism and propose how it can be preserved in the country at time there is a marked development in technology and evolution in mentalities.
He insisted that the Commission intends to put a stop to the spate of bad blood spread around by Cameroonians who propagate ethnocentrism, tribalism, hate language and a vile atmosphere, especially in the social media.
He recalled that Cameroon boasts of two official languages (English and French), over 250 ethnic groups and more than 300 mother languages, which now necessitate the construction of a vibrant multilingual and multicultural Nation.
At the end of the reflections, a total of 62 recommendations were made to the Commission. They will be subject to a closer analysis before a report would be sent to the President of the Republic.
